What are Chemical Peels?
A chemical peel is a cosmetic procedure in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to exfoliate and remove damaged outer layers. The process promotes the regeneration of new skin cells, revealing smoother, healthier, and more youthful skin. Chemical peels come in three main categories:
1. Superficial peels, or light peels, target the outermost layer of skin (epidermis) to treat minor skin issues like dry patches and slight discoloration.
2. Medium peels penetrate deeper to improve texture, pigmentation, and moderate acne scarring.
3. Deep peels go even further, addressing significant skin damage such as deep wrinkles or more severe scarring.
Who is a Candidate?
Chemical peels are suitable for most individuals seeking skin rejuvenation, and they are particularly effective for those dealing with concerns such as fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage and pigmentation issues, acne and acne scars, uneven skin tone and texture, dull or tired-looking skin.
However, candidates with certain skin conditions, such as active eczema, rosacea, or a history of keloid scarring, may need to avoid chemical peels or opt for a gentler treatment. While chemical peels work well on all skin types, individuals with darker skin tones may require a more tailored treatment to minimize the risk of hyperpigmentation.

What to Expect?
Depending on the peel you receive, the process can last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. You will feel a tingling or mild stinging sensation during the chemical peel as the chemical solution is applied to your skin. The sensation may be more intense for deeper peels, but this is temporary and subsides after the treatment. After the peel is left on for the appropriate amount of time, it is neutralized, and your skin will be gently cleaned.
Aftercare
Immediately after the chemical peel solution, your skin may appear red or slightly swollen, similar to a mild sunburn. This is normal and will subside in a few days. Hydrate your skin using a gentle, nourishing moisturizer to prevent dryness and protect it from sun exposure by applying broad-spectrum sunscreen regularly. When cleansing, use a mild cleanser and avoid harsh scrubbing or exfoliation until your skin fully recovers. During the healing process, you may experience flaking or peeling, especially after medium-depth peels or a deep chemical peel; however, it’s crucial not to pick or pull at the peeling skin, as this can cause scarring and rough skin texture.
