Blepharoplasty

STATE OF THE ART FACILITY

It’s natural for our physical appearance to change as we age. Over the years, our skin can lose elasticity, creating a loose or drooping appearance. This is nothing to be ashamed of! It happens to all of us. However, in some cases, areas of drooping skin can cause physical and emotional discomfort. This can be true for the eyelids, which can sag downwards with time and gravity. If sagging of the eyelids is an issue you’ve been struggling with, read more below to determine if blepharoplasty sounds like a good option for you.

What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that lets us take away extra skin from the eyelids, minimizing the sagging appearance. The surgery can make the area appear tighter and more youthful. It can be used to treat under-eye bags, as well. In addition, for many people, sagging of the upper eyelids can cause issues with vision. This procedure can lift the eyelid and allow vision to be restored. It’s not uncommon for our patients to have this procedure done in combination with other surgeries, such as a brow lift.

Who Is a Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Not everyone is an ideal candidate for blepharoplasty. During our consultation with you, we’ll go over risks. We’ll also talk about your relevant medical history to make sure that you don’t have any conditions that could make the surgery or healing process difficult. Generally, ideal patients are in good health and are experiencing issues due to sagging skin of the upper and/or lower eyelids. Ideal patients should not smoke or should be willing to stop around the time of the surgery. Finally, patients should be willing to talk about their expectations so we can discuss what can be achieved with this procedure.

What to Expect During a Blepharoplasty Procedure

Don’t worry–during our consultation, we’ll give you a thorough plan for preparing for the day of the surgery. Before the day of the procedure, you’ll likely need to have an eye and vision exam. You’ll be asked to adjust or stop taking certain medications, especially ones that can cause heavier bleeding. Depending on the type of anesthesia you’re getting, you also might be asked to refrain from eating for a period of time before the surgery. Finally, make sure someone is ready to drive you home and stay with you to make sure you’re comfortable.

Once anesthesia has been given, we’ll begin to work on either your upper or lower eyelid. On the upper eyelid, we’ll make an incision along your lid’s natural fold, allowing us to access and take out muscle and skin. The cut will be closed up and the area will be tightened. For lower eyelid surgery, we’ll create an incision either slightly below your lashes or inside of the eyelid. Skin will be taken out and resituated, removing the sagging effect.

Blepharoplasty Aftercare

Because blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that’s done so close to the eyes, it’s not uncommon for patients to have certain symptoms afterward, including blurring of vision, sensitivity to light, and swelling, as well as physical discomfort. We’ll give you detailed instructions on how to take care of yourself at home. Pain can often be managed with an ice pack, and you might be given eye drops or other remedies. You’ll be asked to keep your head elevated, even when you’re sleeping, for the first several days after surgery. You’ll also need to take it easy for a set period of time to make sure that the area can heal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a lower blepharoplasty last?

Your lower blepharoplasty results will last a lifetime. Lower eyelid surgery is an excellent procedure for individuals seeking permanent renewal of their lower lids.

How long does an upper blepharoplasty last?

An upper blepharoplasty will last from five to seven years. This is because the skin around your upper eyelids will continue to age even after surgery.

What is the best age for blepharoplasty?

Drooping or sagging eyelids can appear as soon as 30. The best age for blepharoplasty will depend on your concerns and treatment goals.

What type of anesthesia is used for blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty at TruForm Surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation, ensuring patient comfort throughout the procedure.

How long does the recovery process take after blepharoplasty?

While individual recovery times may vary, most patients can return to normal activities within 7-10 days after the procedure. Full healing may take several weeks.

Will blepharoplasty leave visible scars?

Incisions for blepharoplasty are carefully placed in natural creases or inside the eyelid, minimizing visible scarring. Any minor scarring typically fades over time.

Can blepharoplasty correct drooping eyebrows?

While blepharoplasty focuses on the eyelids, it may be combined with a brow lift for patients concerned about drooping eyebrows. Dr. Brittany Eidson can recommend the most appropriate treatment plan during your consultation.

How long do the results of blepharoplasty last?

The results of blepharoplasty are typically long-lasting. While the natural aging process will continue, most patients enjoy their refreshed appearance for many years.
